Malaysia wins the second Bocuse d’Or Asia with an all-female team

Taking place during the trade show Gourmet World Shanghai (17-19 March 2010 / Shanghai-China), the second Bocuse d’Or Asia is on its way to become the most renowned culinary competition in Asia. It is a very efficient springboard for the most talented cooks of this part of the world, possibly leading to the prestigious Bocuse d’Or final in Lyon.

11 countries were competing in the competition arena of the Pudong Expo venue in Shanghai: Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Corea, Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia India and Philippines were competing for the first time. Each candidate was to express his skills on a Sterling White Halibut coming from the cold and clear waters of the Norwegian fjords.

Under the presidency of Otto Weibel, the famous chef from Swissotel the Stamford in Singapore, the competition jury was presided by the former 2009 Bocuse d’Or from Norway Geir Skeie and composed of the best chefs from each competing countries.

After 3 days of a very intensive and mouth-watering culinary fight, Malaysia was the outstanding winner of Bocuse d’Or Asia 2010 with its “Halibut Niçoise style with olive, tomato, caviar and caper” served with its 2 garnishes: “Goat cheese croquette with green pea-mint flan and salad” and “Pumpkin confit sweet potato filled pasta”.

Malaysia was also the only all-female team competing, led by the very punchy and skilled See Lay Na, assisted by Goh Miow Di alias Mandy. According to her president Federico Michielitto and her coach Marcel Kofler, “See Lay Na is not all sugar, spice and everything. She packs a punch that can beat most men in the kitchen!”. See Lay Na was awarded the golden trophy and a 10.000 € prize money.

China came second, Japan, the former winner in 2008, came 3rd and Indonesia came 4rth. All of these 4 countries are now officially selected d to compete for the final Bocuse d’Or in Lyon during Sirha 25th and 26th January 2011. The best commis price was awarded by the Bocuse d’Or Winners Academy to Risky Hidayah from Indonesia.
